Police seek next of kin for homeless man killed in traffic

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady police are seeking the next of kin for an unidentified homeless man killed after running into traffic on Saturday night.

The victim was found at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the street at the intersection of Albany Street and Martin Street after the man ran into traffic and jumped onto a moving vehicle.

An autopsy was conducted on Sunday that confirmed that the victim died due to injuries suffered after he fell off the moving vehicle, with the man suffering a torn aorta and internal head bleeding.

The victim was declared deceased shortly after police arrived on the scene.

Sgt. Bradley Carlton said the victim’s motive for running into oncoming traffic has yet to be determined.

“We don’t know the motivation, but will likely know more when we get the results of the toxicology report,” Carlton said.

Carlton said the police department cannot release the identity of the victim pending family notification, which has proven difficult in the victim’s case.

“The deceased from this incident was homeless without any known family in the area, so it may be a while before we can locate a next of kin,” Carlton said.

Schenectady detectives have found no indication of foul play in the course of their investigation, which included interview with the parties involved.

Carlton said the department would continue to seek a next of kin for the victim.
